Microsoft BI VHD XII – SQL 2012

Update 5/25/2012: Just had someone reach out to me today in regards to a file size issue with the extract.  They were stating that it required 6PB instead of 60GB of space.  When doing the extract they were using the built-in extracting within Windows 7.  I had used WinRAR without any issues.  They downloaded that tool and successfully extracted the files.  Just wanted to make mention of this in case anyone else runs into an issue like this.

After I heard that the new version of the Microsoft Business Intelligence VHD was available I downloaded it to check it out.  The major change was that it now had the RTM release of SQL Server 2012 all setup on it.  You can check out the new demo solution in the catalog here http://mssalesdemos.com and you can download it from here http://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/pd/BIVHD/enus/.

You can download the VHD Hyper-V image, the zip file is 21.6GB and when you extract out the contents you will need approximately 58GB of space (and you will also want some free space as well because the image is setup to grow out to 250GB if needed).  The recommended memory to run this is 8GB, but unfortunately I don’t have that available, so I tested it out with only around 4.5GB of RAM and devoted 2 processors to try and run it with VirtualBox.

The password for the image is the typical pass@word1 for the contoso\Administrator user.  The name of the server is SQLIMAGE2012.

Now since I am using VirtualBox I disabled all of the Hyper-V services along with some additional ones that are not needed to save on some RAM like Remote Desktop services and Windows Defender.  I then took a look at the SQL Services setup and … grrrr … noticed that there are just a few, like three instances.  By this I mean there are three instances of the DB engine (which are definitely not needed), none of the SQL Agent services are running, all three of the SSAS services are running which is good, and they also have two instances of SSRS running (no idea why, similar to the DB engine setup).

image

So here is the breakdown on the three DB engine instances, the default is for all of the sample databases for the demos along with the MDS database:

image

The multidimensional instance is where the DQS databases reside:

image

And the PowerPivot instance is where the SharePoint databases reside:

image

Wow, let’s see how they are doing on memory with all three of them running:

image

If you are not going to be doing any DQS you can safely shutdown the Multidimensional instance until you are ready to do so (free up a little more memory).  In looking at the database names I don’t see the SSISDB catalog, so I guess there are probably no demos of any Integration Services.

So along with this I also have to watch out for the other SQL services like Analysis Services (SSAS) that needs a bit of memory:

image

The top one is the Multidimensional instance, the second one is the PowerPivot, and the third instance (the default) is Tabular SSAS.  So the majority of the data and memory consumption is happening in the PowerPivot and Tabular databases which makes since with the xVelocity in-memory database technology at work here.

Then don’t forget about the two Native instances of SSRS running:

image

Probably don’t need either of these running and by looking at the database names I only see the databases setup for the new SharePoint Integrated mode setup as the Shared Service Application.  So you could safely shut both of these down for the time being as well.

Well how about we take a look at the SharePoint setup and some of the demos.  In attempting to go to the SQL Image 2012 home page (http://intranet.contoso.com/SitePages/Home.aspx) I got that the page could not be displayed.  So I went to the localhost or server name page instead and it worked just fine (http://sqlimage2012/SitePages/Home.aspx).  Without troubleshooting this further I went with the server name setup and had to modify my connection and URL references for the Power View reports.

image

We can see a few minor typos with the Power View name not including the space.  The scripts for each of the demos is provided in the Shared Documents library:

image

All of the images that will be used for the demos have been setup on a separate website instead of being stored in SharePoint:

image

Here are the examples of the Power View reports:

And there is a nice home page setup for the Contoso Telco company as well (this uses the Multidimensional instance of SSAS, so if you shut that down you will need to start it back up).  You might need to refresh it a few times to get the site and data warmed up a bit so that everything gets displayed:

Well that is the quick overview of the new XII image.  There is plenty more and I will keep exploring and leave some for you to check out as well, enjoy!

Thanks for digging that out, I’ll sure give it a try – time to play with BI some more.

Use this trick if you have trouble booting the image i Virtual Box: http://ollysense.blogspot.com/2010/05/virtualbox-using-hyper-v-vhd-image.html

Yep, every drive you setup with VirtualBox always gets setup initially as a SATA, so you always need to remove it and add it as an IDE. At least that is my experience.

I’ve downloaded twice and received a corrupt ZIP file both times. How has anyone managed to get this running?

    • Anders Ohlund said

Yes – just make sure that the download manager is not interrupted during the download – I managed to get a functional copy on the second attempt…

Hi Dan – Did you manage to re-arm Office? I have run the powershell script but nothing seems to happen..?

    • denglishbi said

I haven’t tried yet, but i have used this information to rearm Office previously on VMs for another 30-days (can be used up to 5 times to give you 180-days).

Run the command prompt (might need to do this as Administrator)

Copy and paste the following and press enter.

      “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform\OSPPREARM.EXE”

Once you open up one of the Office apps you can simply click on the Cancel to activate your Office and you can continue the Trial.

    Hi Dan

I was reading your blog entry about setting up the latest sales demo.

I was able to successfully download the image but my problem is I absolutely cannot get any of the demos to work

Under Oracle Virtual Box 4.018 with 4.5GB memory, 2 co processors…
When I try to boot up the it looks like its booting into window server 8…but then i encounter the windows blue screen
of death within in the virtual image then it stops and tries to reboot again.
Unfortunately again it his the blue screen. Even after increasing
the memory allocated to virtual image I still get the problem.

Running as a vwmdk (i converted the vhd to vmwk using winimage)
file and under vmware workstation I am successfully able to log into the Contoso sharepoint virtual image
and using http://sqlimage2012/SitePages/Home.aspx I got to the Demo Home page.
    (http://localhost/SitePages/Home.aspx also works)

However when ever I click on the Telco demo, I am continually get the error
cannot find site. I also get the same thing when clicking on all the power view reports too.

The power view scripts open…but none of the power view or the Telco demos work.
In your edit urls and repointed things to get everything working I was wondering where exaclty you made the changes and what where
    the changes were made.

    Thank you john

When using this with VirtualBox you need to make sure that when you add the hard drive that you set it up as a IDE instead of a SATA. By default it seems like VirtualBox sets them up as SATA, so you need to remove that one and then add it back in as IDE. When using the Power View reports and the link sqlimage2012 you will need to update the Power View connections so that they are pointing to the proper connection file, so just using the manage data connections option and edit the entity source that is setup for them.

      • john said

Thanks Dan I really appreciate your response, yes I was able to finally start the image in Virtual Box, by using IDE instead of SATA…
However I am still struggling trying to repoint the power view reports to the proper connection files.
Is the “manage data connections option” available in “Site Actions” tab within Sharepoint.. I cant seem to find this option anywhere …

        Thank you again John

      • denglishbi said

The option is in the context menu of the Power View report. You will see the option called ‘Manage Data Sources’ and this will then take you to the EntityDataSource. Click on that and then modify the connection string to point to the proper URL. If you are in the PowerPivot gallery you will need to change the library view from Gallery to All Documents first so that you can access the context menu for the items in the library. Without a lot of memory this image is really not usable. You need to really manage the services that are running to try and free up any memory that you can.

    Thanks Dan for your help

I think I may be facing an issue with memory but Im not sure as I have shutdown all he Hyper V services and others unnecessary services you mentioned.

But I definitely cant launch the PowerPivot Gallery within Sharepoint.

I start at the Self-Service BI page where it lists all the models associated with the demo page.
The first model in the page is the Auto Sales Model
When I try and click translucent icon “create power view report ” to invoke power view and and make the appropriate changes to the power view reports within the gallery.

I keep on encountering the error message

    *****************************************************************************************************************************************
“The web application at http://sqlimage2012/SelfService BI/Auto Sales Model.bism could no be found.
Verify that you have typed the URL correctly.
If the url should be serving exisiting content, the system administrator may need
to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application

    Correlation ID:XXXXXXXXXXXX

    Date and Time:XXXXXXXXXXXX

    *******************************************************************************************************************************************

I try all the other models and i get the same issue.

So Im wondering is there any other way of getting into power view to make general changes to the settings

    Thank you again John

It is possible that another modification I made was to made a change to the Alternate Access Mappings in SharePoint Central Administration. When I look at that I only see two entries, one for http://sqlimage2010 and one for http://sqlimage2012:19559. So if you see the intranet contoso one you might want to either remove it or change it accordingly. Once you do that then maybe this will resolve your issue.

      • john said

Dan thank you for all your help on this…

That was the final piece in the jigsaw.
Yes you have to remove intranet contoso url in the Alternate Access Mappings in SharePoint Central Administration and have it point to http://sqlimage2012/ instead.
You then go into each individual power view report settings using the manage data sources and correct the entitydatasource

        Everything works now

        Thanks again John

    Hi Dan,

I’m not able to login with pass@word1 for administrator.

    Many Thanks
    Chandu

    • denglishbi said

I just tested out my image again and that is the correct password that you need to use to login.

    • Duncan said

You’ve probably worked it out by now or given up, but for anyone else with password problems, try pass”word1 instead. If your computer is set to British like mine then the ” and @ keys are the other way round from US machines, so need to be swapped when typing on a virtual or remote machine in US format.

    Hi Dan,

When I try to edit the manage data source I get the following error:

The item ‘http://sqlimage2012/SelfService BI/Auto Sales Sample Report.rdlx’ cannot be found. —> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ItemNotFoundException: The item ‘http://sqlimage2012/SelfService BI/Auto Sales Sample Report.rdlx’ cannot be found.

    Any Idea?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I try to use this via mssalesdemo.com. But whenever I click on any PowerPivot report in the gallery, I get “Unable to process the request. Wait a few minutes and try performing this operation again.”

    What gives?

    Hi Dan,

I am very keen to install this VM and have a play around with all the latest toys. However, when I try to download from ‘http://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/pd/BIVHD/enus/default.aspx’, I keep getting redirected to the Windows Server 2012 evaluation download page. I suspect this is due to me running Windows 8 on the machine I am trying to download to. I have actually seen the VM running on Windows 8, so am sure this will work. My issue is I just can’t download the damn file 😦 Do you have any advice how I might get round this, an alternate download location maybe?

    Many thanks,

    David

    • iqbal said

Is there any other alternate download location?
MS should make a note either this is not available anymore or move to another else.

      Many thanks..
